Applying for a Skilled Worker visa in the UK can feel overwhelming, but the process becomes much more manageable with proper preparation. As the polite version of the “6 Ps” goes, Prior Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

This Skilled Worker visa allows skilled professionals to live and work in the UK, provided they meet key requirements such as sponsorship, salary thresholds, and English language proficiency. It is a route to settlement, and applicants may be able to include a dependant partner and children.

This step-by-step summary will provide a basic understanding of the Skilled Worker visa requirements based on applying outside the UK.

Let’s get started!

Step 1: Prepare for the Application

  1. Confirm that you meet the eligibility criteria, including:

    • Be at least 18 years old.

    • Not fall under Part 9 of the Immigration Rules (grounds for refusal).

    • Meet the financial requirements (see Step 16).

    • Meet the genuineness requirement for a Skilled Worker.

    • Have a criminal record certificate, if applicable (see Step 17).

    • Provide a Tuberculosis (TB) certificate, if required.

    • Include an award from the Government or an international scholarship agency if you have one.

  2. Gather necessary supporting documents (see Step 18).

Step 2: Obtain Sponsorship (20 Points)

  1. Secure a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from an A-rated Home Office-authorised sponsor.

  2. Ensure your job is on the eligible list (2020 occupation codes).

  3. Your sponsor must:

    • Pay the Immigration Skills Charge in full.

    • Ensure the job meets National Minimum Wage regulations.

    • Provide evidence of the genuine need for the role.

Step 3: Meet the Skill & Salary Requirements (20 Points)

  1. Confirm that your job is at the appropriate skill level.

  2. Meet the salary requirements (Appendix Skilled Worker ST4.2):

    • The salary threshold may be lower if you are a new entrant (under 26), a recent graduate, or in a shortage occupation.

    • Standard salary threshold: £38,700 per year or £15,88 per hour (subject to exceptions).

    • Meet the financial requirements, such as having funds of at least £1,270 within your bank account for at least 28 days at the time you submit your application, unless the sponsor will maintain and accommodate you up to the end of the first month of employment, to the amount of at least £1,270.

Step 4: Prove English Language Ability (10 Points)

  1. Demonstrate English language ability (Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening) at CEFR Level B1 using one of the following:

    • A UK degree or an equivalent recognised qualification.

    • An approved English test (e.g., IELTS for UKVI).

    • Nationality from a majority English-speaking country.

Step 5: Apply Online

  1. Apply for Entry Clearance from outside the UK online via the UK Home Office website using the ‘Skilled Worker Visa’ form.

  2. Pay the required fees, including:

    • Home Office application fee (varies based on job type and length of visa).

    • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) (unless exempt).

Step 6: Attend Biometrics Appointment

  1. Book and attend a biometric appointment at a visa application centre.

  2. Upload your supporting documents, including:

    • Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

    • Proof of qualifications and experience.

    • Employment details (contract, job description).

    • Sponsor letter confirming your employment.

    • Financial documents (bank statements, sponsor maintenance confirmation).

    • English language certificate.

    • Passport & ID documents.

    • Birth certificate.

    • Criminal record certificate (if required).

    • Tuberculosis test results (if applicable).

    • Accommodation details.

    • Travel history & previous countries lived in.

    • Parents details.

Step 7: Wait for a Decision

  1. Receive a decision from the Home Office within:

    • ~3 weeks (if applying from outside the UK).

    • ~8 weeks (if applying from inside the UK).

  2. If successful, receive your visa decision letter.

Step 8: Future Pathways

  1. If you meet the residence and salary thresholds, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years.

  2. The Home Office will provide details of your work conditions and restrictions.
